Spraying vs Hand Painting: What Is the Difference?

Both spraying and hand painting can change the colour of a kitchen, fitted cabinetry or piece of furniture. However, they do not create the same quality of finish.

Hand painting applies the coating using brushes and rollers. Professional spraying distributes it as a controlled, fine mist, allowing the coating to settle evenly across the surface.

If you want a smooth, consistent finish without visible brush or roller marks, professional spraying is the clear choice.

A Smooth, Factory-Quality Appearance

The greatest difference is visible in the finished surface.

Even a skilled hand painter can leave subtle brush strokes, roller texture or variations where one section overlaps another. These marks may be particularly noticeable on large flat doors, modern slab cabinetry, gloss surfaces and darker colours that reflect the light.

Spraying applies the coating evenly without a brush or roller touching the surface. This produces a much smoother finish with consistent colour, sheen and coverage across doors, drawer fronts, cabinet frames and furniture.

The result feels closer to newly manufactured cabinetry than something that has simply been repainted.

The Limitations of Hand-Painting

Creating a perfectly consistent surface by hand is extremely difficult. Common problems can include:

  • Visible brush strokes

  • Roller stipple or an orange-peel texture

  • Lines where painted sections overlap

  • Uneven coating thickness

  • Drips or pooling around detailed areas

  • Variations in colour or sheen

  • Brush fibres, roller lint or debris becoming trapped in the paint

  • Paint building up around corners, mouldings and door profiles

Brush and roller marks can become even more visible when natural or artificial light travels across the cabinetry. Instead of seeing only the chosen colour and finish, you may also see the direction in which the paint was applied.

Spraying eliminates contact marks and allows detailed profiles, edges and large flat surfaces to receive a more uniform finish.

Consistency Across the Entire Project

A kitchen or fitted furniture project can contain many separate surfaces: doors, drawers, end panels, frames, shelves, mouldings and decorative details.

When these are painted by hand, differences in pressure, direction and the amount of paint applied can create variations between one section and another.

Professional spray equipment allows the coating to be applied in controlled, even layers. This creates greater consistency across the entire project, so removable pieces and fixed cabinetry look like part of the same original finish.

This is particularly important when transforming:

  • Kitchen cabinetry

  • Fitted wardrobes

  • Media walls and alcove units

  • Home offices

  • Tables, chairs and sideboards

  • Detailed or decorative furniture

  • Large, flat contemporary doors

  • Previously gloss or laminate surfaces

Does Spraying Hide the Natural Character of Wood?

A smooth sprayed finish does not mean that every surface must lose its character.

Where appropriate, natural grain and subtle details can remain visible beneath the new coating. What spraying removes is the unwanted texture created by brushes and rollers, not necessarily the character of the original material.

Before spraying, we assess the surface and prepare it according to the material, condition and intended result.

Preparation Still Matters

Spraying alone cannot compensate for poor preparation. The quality of the finished surface begins long before the first coating is applied.

Damage, chips, cracks, worn edges, peeling vinyl and water affected areas must first be restored. Existing surfaces are then prepared using the most suitable method for solid wood, MDF, laminate, melamine, gloss or previously painted finishes.

We can also fill previous handle holes, install new handles, upgrade hinges and correct doors or drawers that have moved out of alignment.

Careful preparation creates the foundation. Professional spraying then creates the smooth, consistent final appearance.

Is a Sprayed Finish Durable?

We use premium, low-VOC coatings with a Class 1 scrub rating. These coatings are designed for high traffic areas such as kitchens and offer excellent durability, scratch resistance and lasting colour vibrancy.

Durability depends on the complete process: restoring damage, preparing the particular surface correctly, selecting a suitable coating and allowing it to cure properly.

A professional sprayed finish combines this careful preparation with an even application, producing cabinetry and furniture designed to withstand everyday use.

Is Hand-Painting Ever the Right Choice?

Some homeowners deliberately choose hand painting because they want visible brush strokes and a traditional, handcrafted appearance. That texture can suit certain rustic or deliberately aged interiors.

However, if your goal is a flawless, contemporary or factory quality finish, hand-painting cannot produce the same level of smoothness and consistency as professional spraying.

For a finish that looks as though it was always part of the cabinetry, spraying is the superior application method.

A Better Way to Transform Existing Cabinetry

Professional spraying allows an existing kitchen, fitted installation or piece of furniture to be restored rather than unnecessarily replaced.

Alongside creating a smoother finish, refurbishment preserves the materials and craftsmanship already within the home. It reduces the waste, manufacturing, packaging and transportation associated with buying replacements.

The result is not simply a painted kitchen or piece of furniture. It is a carefully restored surface with a refined new finish, created without discarding something that still has years of useful life ahead of it.
